The brief
The client wanted St John the Baptist shown the way old devotional prints often picture him: his head on a platter, in a bold woodcut style.
The approach
Woodcut suits the subject perfectly: heavy carved lines and solid black for the hair and beard, with simple hatching to shape the face and the rim of the platter. Because the tattoo sits at an angle on the inner thigh, I drew the blood specifically for this placement, so it flows naturally downward on the body instead of following the tilt of the design. Red is the only colour, which keeps all the focus on the piece.
