Nervous about your first tattoo? Here's exactly what happens, from the first message to aftercare, so there are no surprises on the day.

Getting your first tattoo is a big deal. It's permanent, it's a little bit painful, and if you've never set foot in a studio it can feel like walking into a club where everyone else already knows the rules.

I want blinc.ink to be the opposite of that. No attitude, no silly questions, and no rushing. Here's exactly what happens when you get tattooed with me, step by step, so you know what to expect before you even send a message.

1. Start with an idea (it doesn't need to be finished)

You don't need a perfect design or a clear plan. Some people arrive knowing exactly what they want; others have a feeling, a meaningful object or a handful of saved images. All of that is fine.

You've got two routes:

  • Flash: designs I've already drawn, ready to tattoo. Each one is tattooed only once, so it stays yours. Browse them in the Flash Vault.
  • Custom: a design drawn from scratch around your idea, your placement and what it means to you.

If you're not sure which suits you, that's exactly what the first chat is for.

2. A free, no-pressure chat

Everything starts with a relaxed conversation on WhatsApp. The quickest way is my consultation form: tap through a few questions about your idea, where you'd like it and roughly how big, and it writes the message for you. You can attach reference photos once WhatsApp opens.

We'll talk through your idea, placement, size and budget, and I'll answer every question you have, however small. Nothing is booked and nothing is paid at this stage.

3. Securing your date

When you're happy to go ahead, a £30 deposit secures your appointment. It isn't an extra cost: it comes off the price of your tattoo on the day. If life gets in the way, just give me at least 48 hours' notice and your deposit carries over to a new date.

Every appointment is a private, 1-to-1 session at Dermoda Studio in Highbridge, so you'll have my full attention for the whole time you're with me.

4. Your design

For custom pieces, I draw your design specifically for your appointment, built around everything we've talked about. On the day, we look at it together before anything else happens. This is the moment to check it feels right: we can scale it up or down, adjust details or try it in a slightly different spot.

We don't start until you're 100% happy. Changing your mind at this stage is completely normal, and I'd much rather spend an extra ten minutes getting it right.

5. The night before

A bit of preparation makes a real difference to how the session feels and how your tattoo heals:

  • Sleep well. A rested body handles the sensation much better.
  • Skip the alcohol. It thins the blood, which makes the session harder and can affect the result.
  • Eat a proper meal a few hours before your appointment, and bring snacks and a sugary drink.
  • Moisturise the area in the days leading up to it, and avoid sunburn.
  • Wear loose, dark clothes that give easy access to the area being tattooed.

My pre-prep guide covers all of this in more detail, and you can download it as a PDF.

6. On the day

Bring photo ID (a driving licence or passport): by law I can only tattoo people aged 18 and over. The studio is on Market Street in Highbridge, a short walk from Highbridge & Burnham station, with an affordable car park opposite.

Once we've confirmed the design, I'll place a stencil on your skin so you can see exactly how it sits. Look at it in the mirror from every angle. If it's not quite right, we'll move it, as many times as you need.

Then we start. Here's what to know:

  • What does it feel like? People describe it as a cat scratch, a hot vibration or a bad sunburn. It's uncomfortable, but manageable, and the anticipation is almost always worse than the real thing.
  • You set the pace. Need a break to stretch, breathe or grab a snack? Just say. There's no rush.
  • Your session, your way. If you'd like a quiet session with headphones, that's fine. If you want to chat the whole way through, also fine. If it's your first tattoo and you'd like me to explain every step as we go, I'm happy to. You can tell me your preferences in the consultation form so the room is set up for you before you arrive.
  • Feeling a bit off? If you feel lightheaded or queasy at any point, tell me straight away. It's usually just a dip in blood sugar and passes quickly.

7. Afterwards

When we're done, I'll clean and wrap your tattoo and talk you through exactly how to look after it. You'll also have my full aftercare guide to refer back to.

My support doesn't stop when you leave the chair. If you're ever unsure how your tattoo is healing, send me a photo on WhatsApp and I'll take a look. And if a little ink drops out while it heals, I offer one free touch-up within the first three months, as long as the aftercare guide has been followed.

A few honest answers

  • "Will you judge my idea?" No. Your first tattoo or your fifteenth, small or large, meaningful or just because you like it, you'll be treated exactly the same.
  • "What if I panic and want to stop?" We stop. We can take a break, talk it through, or carry on another time.
  • "Can I bring someone with me?" Ask me when we chat and we'll work out what's best for the space and your session.

Ready when you are

If you're thinking about your first tattoo, the easiest first step is a message. Start your free consultation, or browse the Flash Vault for ideas. I'm based at Dermoda Studio in Highbridge, Somerset, about five minutes from Junction 22 of the M5.
